The original printing building that is now Vanguard Lofts had two elevators in the front of the building. During construction, one elevator was removed to make room for the current mail room. The other elevator car was replaced with a new one. But, the motor, over 50 years old, remained in place. After residents moved into the building, the motor periodically caused problems. Finally, in late 2003, it gave out. After the usual bidding process and ordering of parts, the replacement process began on March 25, 2004. A special assessment was required for the approximately $50,000 replacement costs. For posterity, here are a few pictures of the elevator motor going in/out:
