Michelle:
Sorry to hear that your packages went missing....years ago when I lived in Lincoln Park, the mailman dropped packages off in front of the landlord's door on the first floor, in plain sight of anyone walking through the lobby. I had at least one package stolen from there and it was pretty upsetting.
I don't know if a security camera would necessarily stop your packages being taken however.
You may want to reconsider the post office box option. I had one for over ten years at the main post office on Harrison and Canal. I originally got it for business reasons, but kept it as my main mailing address.
I think the annual cost for a 6x6 size box ran me about $68. (Those Mailboxes Etc. places charge more, so I'd avoid them and go to the U.S. post office). If you get too much mail or a package that doesn't fit into your box, they leave a card in your box (which, of course, only someone with a key to your box would be able to get) and you go to a window to pick it up. I have never had a problem with not receiving packages this way (and I order a lot of stuff from catalogs). It's also great if you go out of town (which I also used to do a lot) because they will hold your mail if it piles up in the box. And - here's the best part - the main post office is open ALL the time - 24 hours/day, 7 days/week. And someone is always at the package window. And, they have customer parking in the basement, but it also not a bad walk from Vanguard if you want exercise, or you can take the Blue Line and get off at the Clinton stop and walk a block or two.
I didn't receive a Christmas present this year from a friend because she sent it to my Vanguard lofts address instead of the P.O. box and I was out of town the week it arrived...so I know how you feel.
