> Before installing a second lock, check with management company. I recall that the Board passed a rule that the only secondary locks that could be installed were locks "built into" doorknobs and then they had to be the same color as the deadbolts already installed. A second deadbolt was not allowed. This rule was passed before I became sec'y of the Board and so I don't have the minutes of the meeting at which it was passed and I may be recalling it incorrectly. Bottom line though, I would check with 1P as to what is allowed. As far as replacing the existing deadbolt, I don't know what is and is not allowed.
My recollection is similar to Mary's. Loretta didn't answer this when
asked, and her response to a list of questions was a glib:
Most of your doors have double locks on them.
Hardly helpful. Also, quite inaccurate.
In fairness to Michael, much of the discussion between he/I has been
private email to try to keep as much heat off the public board as
possible. In private Email, Michael reaffirmed Mary's interpretation.
We had a lock fellow come out friday who installed a knob lock, and put
on a much stronger deadbolt, and a discrete plate to reduce possiblity
of prying lock open. Cost: $429
Two other deadbolt options:
1) install a key-deadbold and be more secure, but in noncompliance with
the loft's bylaws
2) install a one-side deadbold (locks/unlocks from inside only). This
presents its own problems, because one-sided locks keep folks out in an
emergency.
The locksmith we had has been used by others in the loft, and he knew the
layout and we're quite satisfied with his work.
If people don't have their alarm system activated, you might consider
getting it activated. We screwed up the "alarm-off" for the first time
a few months ago, and the alarm folk called within about 3 minutes and the
police were at the door within 10 (we forgot the "code" to let them know
it was "really us"
