History
Sanders Fire Insurance Maps (UIC Library) for 1916 show several brick dwellings on Throop and a frame office and frame store at 1252-4 Van Buren. The 1917 map shows them replaced by the imaginatively named Throop-Van Buren Building. No building permit could be found for this building so it is not yet known exactly for whom, or for what it was built.
In the 1930's the Regensteiner Printing Company expanded by taking over use of the building. It was also used as temporary storage for the Chicago Public Library (who had their administrative offices next door) and was briefly considered as a home to the new central library when it was deemed necessary to move the main collection from Michigan Avenue.
Further research is being done and hopefully, a more thorough history will be presented. (Courtesy of Mary Deskovitch)
This page will be expanded periodically as we discover more information about the building.
Pictured below is the southwest corner of the building at the intersection of Van Buren and Troop. This picture was taken during the summer of 1998 while the bulding was being developed.
