I've read several articles relating to this West Loop Promenade
development. While the Sundance theater is being touted as one of the
highlights of this development, I guess the controversy is with the
25-story residential tower they were initially planning to build at
that site. It was not well received by the West Loop Chamber of
Commerce. The theater project was seen as an attempt to disguise the
developers main purpose, which was to build the huge residential
tower. It will be interesting to see how it plays out. I personally
welcome anything being put there, particularly if it would preserve
the old warehouse, which I'm unclear if they plan to do or not.
In the meantime, I highly recommend Muvico theater in Rosemont, just
off 90 and River Road. It is spotless inside (it's new, to be fair),
has a great restaurant, and offers "Premiere" seating which is
basically oversized plush loveseats that can be reserved by purchasing
the tickets online. The Premiere seating also includes valet parking
and free popcorn. It's a little more money than a standard movie at
$15/ticket, but to be able to show up 5 minutes before the movie
starts, not have to find a parking spot, not have to crawl over anyone
or scan the darkness for a seat, makes it all worth it for me. As
mentioned, this is the same theater they will be constructing on Block
37.
