The contract ends in August, 2010. A mass boycott would be one tactic,
but it should be done knowing what's involved: 1) It should be done by
nearly all current subscribers; some people are happy with Dish.
2) Cancellation would leave those who cancel without a provider
indefinitely
Roddy has two contracts. One with us, which is the 10-year exclusivity
contract; that other with Echostar/Dish Network, who provides his
equipment. His contract with Echostar is likely the one he's referring
to. Our contract with him is silent on this. In his original note to
owners last year explaining the HDTV hookup process, Roddy gave people
the option of buying a receiver from him, or getting one from a
commercial source. Because receivers tend not to be compatible, if you
don't have an HD tuner built into the tv, you'll have to get an external
receiver.
Whoever said that Comcast would soon be available gave out wrong
information. We're discussing options with them. I just heard from them
a few minutes ago. The issues are costs (to the Association - a
commercial contract to pay the fees from assessments is not a viable
option); the costs to unit owners for installation (the building was
originally wired for cable, but Comcast would have to string their own
lines to each floor and install their own hardware in the building),
whether they would come in despite the exclusivity contract with
USADISH, and what the agreement with them would require.
These issues will be on the agenda for the Weds Board meeting.
